INTERVIEW EDGE • OCT 1993

Legal Lunacy at Stanford

Recently, a self-defense class for women at Stanford University was cancelled after an anonymous complaint of discrimination against men.

The course instructors conceded that the classes were segregated by gender, but only because women students who had been victims of sexual abuse or rape were unlikely to talk about their experiences in front of men.

Although Stanford offered the same class to men, Federal civil rights lawyers didn't see the issues as "separate but equal" and forced the class to integrate.

Every good idea can apparently be pushed to its limit. Even fairness, if pushed too far, can result in unfairness, so interviewers should focus on treating people as unique individuals rather than treating everyone the same.
