Looks and the Law

Santa Cruz, California is the first, and only, town in America to pass a law forbidding discrimination in employment practices based on appearance. This means if a candidate with green spiked hair or a nose ring applies for a job, employers have no legal basis for denying future employment or terminating a current employee for adding these elements.

By assessing each person thoroughly on job-related qualities, employers can avoid future challenges to hiring decisions. Merely reciting the job-related reasons for the turndown can avoid the risk of a lawsuit.

There is useful advice throughout this issue of the newsletter on selection criteria and hiring decisions to help interviewers everywhere, and especially in Santa Cruz!
