U.S. Motivation Waning
INTERVIEW EDGE • JULY 1991
Motivation and commitment in this country seem to be waning at all levels. Ricky Henderson, the great all-around athlete for the Oakland A's was committed to his $3 million per year contract... until another player won a bigger contract than his. In our local high school, they shortened all the academic class periods last year by 10 minutes and created a new period with all those 10 minute increments. What is the new period for? Homework! Most of the students were showing up in class without doing their homework. So the school decided to provide extra time during the school day to do homework. What happened to the days of doing homework at home?
How will this group of students respond to requests that they work overtime to finish a project? With commitment waning, assessment of candidates is even more critical.
